*Jewelry  Care

Putting  on  your  jewelry  just  after you  had  applied  make up, perfume  and hairspray. Put  off  your  necklace, ring, bracelet  and earrings  before  you  take  the hand  and body lotion  or  other  cosmetics. Or  before  having  a  bath  and  massage.

After  wearing, directly  wipe  with  clean, soft  and  dry  cloth. If  you  use  a damp cloth, make  sure your  jewelry  was  dried  before  you  store it.
Don’t  wear  your  ring  and  bracelet  while  washing hand  in  dishwasher. Make  sure the water  you  use  is  chemical  free.

Always  clean up, wiped, dried  your  jewelry  before  and  after wearing, with  a soft cloth. The  dirt  sometimes  give  you  the allergy  affect. Your sweat  and  polluted  air could also hurt  your  jewelry and  its  findings.

Avoid  wearing  jewelry  while  doing  activities  such  as  gardening, playing  sports  or swimming.

Chlorine  can  be  damaging  to  many  stones  and  long  term  exposure  is  even harmful to  gold  and  silver. Don’t  wear  jewelry  while  doing  house  work, like cleaning or gardening. Even  sitting  around  swimming  pool. Swimming  pool  contain  chemical component  as  well  as   in  salon  or  spa.
It  could  hurt  your  jewelry  in long  period. Check  your  jewelry  at  least  once  a year. Bring  it  to  its  maker. Usually  they  give  you  free  service.

Cleaning

To  keep  your  jewelry  clean, is  to  keep  it  away  from  dirty  place  and  chemical component
Clean  gemstone  beads  by  gently  wiping  them, with  a  soft  cloth, but  not  pulling on the  strand.
If  a  stone  is  set  in  Sterling  Silver, avoid  silver  polish  on  the  stone.

Some  stones  that  should  not  be  placed  in  a  cleaning  solution or  ultrasonic cleaner are  pearls, emeralds, opals, and  turquoise. Use  a  soft  cotton  cloth  to  wipe  oils  and dirt  from  these  stones.

But Turquoise can be cleaned by dipping a cloth into soapy water and gently wipe off any dirt then wipe again with a damp cloth and dry.
Do not clean beaded strands jewelry in a dip solution or ultrasonic cleaner. In fact you should not get beaded jewelry wet at all, because water will rot and stretched.

Translucent stones such as diamond, ruby, sapphire, amethyst, citrine and garnet can be cleaned in ultrasonic cleaner if they are not strung on thread or cord and are set in a mounting. Some translucent stones cannot be cleaned this way, they are Emerald, Peridot, Blue Topaz, Aquamarine, and Tanzanite.

Opaque stones should not be placed in an ultrasonic cleaner or dip-cleaned with a cleaning solution. Like Turquoise, Pearls, Opals, Jade, Lapis Lazuli, Carnelian, Jasper and many other opaque stones.

*

To clean pearls, just wear it. Exposure to air and body oil is good for pearls. But. Do not get pearls wet. It  will  weaken  the  stringing  material.
To clean silver in your pearl necklace, gently wipe the silver with soft cotton cloth.

*

*Silver  Cleaning

Some  people  said, to  avoid  tarnish  from  Sterling Silver  jewelry, just  wear  it  often.
Without  wearing, would  be  very  easy  to  get  tarnished. They  said, if  you  put  your sterling  silver jewelry  on  the  night  table  before  sleep, the  next  morning  had tarnished.

Sterling Silver naturally tarnished when exposed to air and body oils. But sometimes it just adds to the character of the piece, where tarnished make differentand unique antique look.

If the tarnish becomes extreme, gently clean it with mild soap and water, use soft cloth and silver polish. Then wipe with a jewelry polishing cloth, a soft flannel that is impregnated with polish.
Some use a soft toothbrush and toothpaste. But most experts caution against it because they feel toothpaste is too abrasive and leaves dulling scratches.

*

In Indonesia (Java) people used to clean silver jewelry with a fruit called, Lerak. It produce bubbles like soap, and cleaned the jewelry instantly like new. Lerak fruit is also used exclusively in cleaning the hand painted Batik cloth.

The  treatment  to  sterling  silver  will  do  to  silver  plated, gold  plated  and  chromed jewelry. Gentle  rubbing  with  soft  dry  cloth  will  be  enough  to  these  plated  works. If it’s  quite  heavy  dull, you  can  use  a  damp  cloth  and  dried  the  jewelry  soon. For plated  and  chromed   metal  are  suggested  not  to  use  chemical  cleaning. Some suggest  to  clean  with  pure  water  and  dried.
Precious  metal  need  no  certain  treatment  and  cleaning. Just  clean  with  mild  soap water  and  tooth  brush.

A metal jewelry can be placed in a dip solution or ultra-sonic cleaner. Some sterling silver is purposefully oxidized, antiqued or enameled and cannot be cleaned in this manner because it will harm the finish. Use soft water soap to clean it gently with a soft brush.
But  for  Pearl, avoid  any  brush. Just  soft  cloth.

Gold and silver, can be placed in a dip solution or ultrasonic cleaner as long as the metal does not have a special finish such as antiquing or enameling nor contains stones that should not be in these cleaners. Just wiping the metal with soft cotton cloth or dipping it unto gentle soap and water solution.

When  cleaning  don’t  use  hairy  cloth. Since  its  fibers  will  remain  in  your  jewelry. Don’t  use  towel  cloth  when  cleaning  your  pearl  jewelry  and  all  kind  of  stone, since it  may  left  scratch.

If  your jewelry  stringing  is  made  of  cord, leather, or  thread, get  rid  from  wet. The damp  will  rotten  the  string.

Store  your  jewelry  in  ‘lie down’  position. Don’t  hang, that will  stretch  the stringing. Clean  your  jewelry  frequently. Or ask  its  maker to  do  it  for you. Usually will be a free service.

Jewelry  with  stone  and  pearl  are  not  suggested  to  use  ultra sonic  cleaner.
It  could  ruin  them , especially  through  the  pores  of  the  stone  and  pearl.

*Storage

Keep  your  jewelry  in  a  clean and  dry place.
Sterling  silver  and  silver/gold  plated  keep  in  a  cool   place.
Don’t  put  your jewelry around  heat, near  the  window, or  in  your car dashboard. Put your  jewelry  away  from  sunlight, since  there’s  certain  gemstones  that easily color’s fade.

Store  your  jewelry  in  cloth  pouch, or  in  separated room  box. The easily tarnished jewelry put  it  in  ziplock.(But  not  the  genuine  Pearl).

Don’t pile and mixed your jewelries since they can hurt each other and scratched. Keep your jewelry in a felt pouch or velvet lined jewelry box when you are not wearing it, to help prevent tarnish and protect your jewelry from scratches. It is wise to have larger jewelry box. Remember, collection is always  growing.

When traveling, put your jewelry in your hand bag. If you will have a jewelry show, put them also in your carried bag. Don’t  put  them  in  baggage.

*Caring  For  Your  Crystals

When not wearing your jewelry with crystals, Sarah Designs recommended that you keep it wrapped to avoid scratching of any smooth surfaces. Velvet or silk pouches are ideal.

Wash Swarovski crystals by hand in lukewarm water to which a few drops of a mild dish detergent has been added. Then rinse under running water and dry with a soft, lint-free cloth to avoid spotting and lint spoiling the .
Under  no  circumstances  should  any  abrasive  or  corrosive  detergents  be  used; glass or  window-cleaning  fluids  should  also  be avoided, as they often cause streaking.
